Svala

Old Norse Svala (f.)

Svala comes from the Old Norse bird-name ‘swallow’. A few instances of the name are recorded in Norway. There is also an attestation in the Lincolnshire Domesday Book, but its form may reflect the earlier Scandinavian *Swalwa or is due to association with the Old English cognate swealwe.
